A Study of Elementary School Teachers-Their Interest & Attitude toward the School Health


Abstract
To evaluate the degree of recognition of and interests in the school health, a set of inquiry has been prepared for the teachers in the employ of elementary schools in Seoul to fill out. The total number of 241 answer sheets was completed and returned by the teachers, and the followings are results as summarized and analyzed therefrom:
1. General background
1) Distribution by ages and experience are relatively even between the 20s and 40s with gradual lessening after the 40s (Figure A?1).
2) The number of years in teaching is in proportion to the number of ages with even distribution between 16?19 years. Gradual decrease shows after the 40s (Figure A?2)
3) Their previous education reveals as follows (Figure A?2) 44.8% 3-year normal school graduate, 40.3% 2-year educational college, 12.5% 4-year college level, 2.0% 2-year graduate level
2. Health education
1) 78. 0% out of the total number of teachers reveal their previous experience in health education, and among the 78.0%: 53. 9%-health education received while in school, 22.4%-in seminar or by special lecture while in the employ of the school, 19. 0%-thru mass media (Figures B?1 & B?2.) 22. 0%-no previous experience in health education.
2) Most of the teachers (93.0%) accept the previous experience as helpful, more of less, in their health education to the children (Figure B?3)).
3) 54.4% out of the total number of teachers feel that the health education should be included in the elementary school curriculum while only small number of teachers (4.1%) do not feel the necessity of the health education.
3. Understanding and knowledge in the health
1) Of development and function of children in physical and emotional aspects: 56.5% have limited amount of understanding and knowledge.
37.3% adequate amount of understanding and knowledge.
66.2% want to but have had no chance of learning (Figure C-1).
2) Of etiology of the disease:
57.7% limited amount of understanding and knowledge.
35.7% adequate amount of understanding and knowledge.
6 6% want to but have had no chance of learning (Figure C-2).
3) Of the first aid:
67.2% limited amount of understanding and knowledge.
23.7% adequate amt of understanding and knowledge.
8.3% want to but have had no chance of learning (Figure C-3).
4) 51.9% of the total number of teachers believe in the fact that the health condition influences inducing the feeling of anger in children, and only 5.8% believe in no specific influences (Figure D-1).
5) The love and attention as felt between the parents and a child are almost same between the teacher and a child (74.7%), however 23.2% believe in a degree but not always.
6) Most of the teachers(88. 8%) recognize the fact that the child is more likely to be affected by environmental influences-parents, sibling, friend, and teacher -as compared to the adult.
7) The children¢¥s personal hygiene should be encouraged in preschool ages (59.3 %), while the personal hygiene from school periods is more effectively maintained (38.2%).
4. Public health control
1) Personal counseling in the public health has been either planned but not carried out or has not even planned (80.1%), while the program is well planned and carried out (18.7%).
2) Annual physical check-up is somewhat helpful to the children (43.6%). It has no practical value (41.5%)
3) The oral vermicide as given by the school in both spring and autumn seasons is only a little help to the children (57.7%). It is very effective (41.0%) (Figure E-4).
4) The special vaccination such as typhus, cholera, encephalitis in prevailing seasons is effective (67.2%), Is of little help (32.8%).
5) The school nurse is very efficient in controling the children¢¥s health(38. 2%).
